What is NLSD-M?

Neutral lipid storage disease with myopathy is when fats (lipids) are stored abnormally in organs and tissues throughout the body. Neutral lipid storage disease (NLSD-M) presents unique challenges to the individual, most notably decreased functional mobility. The information within this page is designed to target just this; improving the body’s ability to be functional. Dietary Insights

One of the primary concerns with NLSD-M is muscle wasting. Although muscle breakdown would have you believe introducing ample amounts of protein would be the solution… think again. According to a 2022 meta-analysis published in the Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia, and Muscle, there is no benefit to consuming more protein than the recommended daily allowance provided by most governments and the National Academy of Medicine.

Adding more protein than necessary will tax the kidneys further than they already are. That said, 20% of total calories should come from protein, with room to increase by 3-5% based on activity level and workout routine. The remaining 80% of calories should be split between 20% fat and 60% carbohydrate.
