What is NLSD-M?
Neutral lipid storage disease with myopathy is when fats (lipids) are stored abnormally in organs and tissues throughout the body. Neutral lipid storage disease (NLSD-M) presents unique challenges to the individual, most notably decreased functional mobility. The recommendations within this page are designed to target just this; improving the body’s ability to be functional. While there’s no established cure for NLSD-M, there are plenty of other diseases out there that are deemed “incurable,” yet people have beaten them. Some would consider this “luck,” but if you examine these cases carefully, you will find a lot of them went “all in” with a healthier lifestyle and gave their body a better chance to heal. NLSD-M is no different. We have found that Gabby responds favorably to the recommendations below by exhibiting more energy, strength, and stability. With that being said, Everyone is different, and you should seek counsel from your medical team before considering treatment.
The experts at Wu Wei Wellness are available to provide input and guidance. They can be reached at 631-828-4976 or info@wuweiwellnessli.com
Recommended Supplements
Some of the supplements below are specific to Gabby’s bloodwork, but many are not uncommon for what you may need to balance the blood of someone with NLSD-M. It’s wise to draw blood regularly to monitor changes and, if necessary, adapt treatment plans accordingly.
We recommend using whole food, organic, and pre-digested supplements for optimal absorption and effectiveness.
**Below, you will find a list of recommended supplements for NLSD-M. It’s wise to consult with your doctor or the experts at Wu Wei Wellness before considering treatment**

Dietary Insights and Advice
One of the primary concerns with NLSD-M is muscle wasting. Although muscle breakdown would have you believe introducing ample amounts of protein would be the solution… think again. According to a 2022 meta-analysis published in the Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia, and Muscle, there is no benefit to consuming more protein than the recommended daily allowance provided by most governments and the National Academy of Medicine.
Adding more protein than necessary will tax the kidneys further than they already are. That said, 20% of total calories should come from protein, with room to increase by 3-5% based on activity level and workout routine. The remaining 80% of calories should be split between 20% fat and 60% carbohydrate.

Not Sure Where to Start?
Myfitnesspal is an excellent resource for anyone just getting started. This program allows you to track your caloric intake and macros by logging your meals into the app. You just track what you eat, and MFP then gives you personalized insights on your diet so you can see where adjustments could be made.
We also recommend following the Mediterranean diet for its benefits towards heart health and overall vitality. The Mediterranean diet is rich in antioxidants, healthy fats, and lean protein. The foundation of the diet comes from plants and whole grains with a moderate amount of seafood, poultry, dairy, and eggs. Red meat is consumed far less often than anything else. American nutrition experts regard this as one of the healthiest eating plans anyone can be in. Furthermore, recent studies were able to link a Mediterranean diet to lower risk factors for heart disease, such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure. The Secret Science of Sweat: Exercise & Its Benefits
We all know the saying… use it or lose it! In the case of NLSD-M, the importance of staying active can’t be stressed enough. Getting involved with physical therapy, strength training, and occupational therapy early is critical. It is important to note that different mutations of NLSD-M have different signs and symptoms, and each workout routine should cater to the individual.
This linked study demonstrates that in addition to fixed weakness, neutral lipid storage disease with myopathy produces a profound block in fat oxidation, which limits exercise tolerance. Intravenous glucose improved maximal oxygen uptake and workload, and it alleviated some of the exercise-induced symptoms. This stresses the importance of carbohydrate metabolism in these patients for energy production in muscle.

Integrating Acupuncture Into Holistic Health
Acupuncture has long been used as a therapeutic intervention to control pain. Acupuncture creates its therapeutic effects by inserting a needle at a specific acupuncture point, thus altering the Qi, which acts as your energy, and blood circulation. Since muscle wasting is a great challenge for NLSDM, electro-acupuncture is an excellent choice to activate muscles and reduce atrophy. Connecting with a licensed acupuncturist is wise for stimulating motor points in the afflicted area(s) and keeping them active.

The Power of Your Mindset
Mindset is one of the most critical aspects of health. Our thoughts shape our daily lives, whether we have a growth or fixed mindset. A fixed mindset puts us in a box that makes us believe nothing will change and that we can never get better.
With a growth mindset, you have accepted that you can change over time, and therefore, you are more open to reflecting, learning, and growing from challenges. With this in mind, failure is less threatening, and we are more willing to embrace any challenges life throws. Any opportunity presents an opportunity to continue to learn and grow.

Unlocking the Secret of Sleep Quality
Sleep, essential for maintaining bio-psycho-social and cultural functions, is a fundamental human need that impacts health and quality of life. It is widely recognized that sleep affects both well-being and health. High-quality sleep is characterized by feeling energetic and fit afterward. Presently, the prevalence of sleep disorders and the association of poor sleep quality with numerous medical conditions highlight its importance.
Additionally, a significant link exists between sleep and physical and psychological health, making sleep quality a critical focus in clinical practices and sleep-related research. When the body sleeps, it heals, so ensuring 6-8 hours of quality undisturbed sleep is paramount.

Nurturing the Spirit
Prayer will help put your mind at ease and help you weather the storm. It can serve as a crucial coping mechanism, assisting individuals in processing and dealing with their emotions in the face of uncertainty. It can offer a sense of hope and optimism, which are essential during challenging times. For many, spiritual beliefs and practices can also provide a framework through which they understand and make sense of their suffering.
Whomever you subscribe to, it’s wise to stay “plugged in” throughout your treatment. Incorporating prayer or meditation into your routine can significantly ease your mind. This spiritual practice can offer solace and strength, helping you navigate treatment challenges and maintain a sense of peace and resilience during difficult times.
